Rax Restaurants?

Team Eat has just discovered the existence of Rax Restaurants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rax_Restaurants) through a devoted follower. According to Wikipedia (yes we realize quoting Wikipedia is like quoting that guy on the bus, but let's suspend disbelief for a second, ok?): "Rax Restaurants is a small midwestern U.S. fast food restaurant chain specializing in roast beef sandwiches, formerly based in Columbus, Ohio. Once a big player in the fast food segment, Rax has extensively scaled down their operations since their peak in the 1980s. Its closest rival in terms of menu offerings is Arby's. Carpediem Management Co. currently operates Rax Restaurants. Today, there are fewer than 30 Rax locations remaining, located in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois, and West Virginia. Many locations have closed in the last couple of years, and the chain seems to be struggling in general. Certain Rax locations are co-branded with other restaurants such as Subway and Long John Silver's."

Rax is famous for their Rax BBC, or Rax Beef Bacon and Cheddar, which are three edible items that are wholly endorsed by Team Eat. Team Eat agrees - beef, bacon, and cheddar are indeed three great tastes that taste great together.

Team Eat has familial ties in Pennsylvania and Illinois and is currently looking on Orbitz for the cheapest daytrip to either of these states.

Have you had any luck with this?

I am from PA and remember Rax fondly from my childhood. But one by one they all seemed to go under.

I really don't remember them as being any better/different than Arby's... the main difference was the presence of the salad bar. The salad bar was cool because there was cheese sauce there so you could put it on your sandwhich without paying for a sandwhich with cheese sauce.

Rax is also where I learned ro be really, really, really, DAMN sure that the white substance you are piling onto your chocolate pudding with abandon is whipped cream and not sour cream. To an 8 year old kid who thinks she has just been handed carte blanch to eat all the whipped cream she wants, they kinda look alike.

BLECH!!!

Anyway ... if you find one you're probably not going to be all that amazed. I remember their food as good but I also remember Arby's food as good, and on a recent road trip I held out for lunch until an exit had an Arby's... and man, it just wasn't like it was in my memory. Very disappointing. It was alright, but not worth skipping 5 exits with Wendy's over.

I realize that this is a REALLY old post, but I just found it and thought I'd make a comment, anyway. I have a few old posts on my own blog that still get comments from time to time.

Anyway, I'm a Rax veteran. I used to work at one in Indiana as a kid. There is still one left in Anderson, Indiana, and then a few scattered around Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky. I just visited the one in Anderson last week. It's really in need of some attention.

There used to be a rax here in New Haven, Indiana. They closed, but I still have fond memories of the late-night dripping BBC.
